HERETIC GAME SERIES LORE HOW TO

The arrow buttons seemed to move around but we didn't immediately know how to do anything else. Well, actually, at first we had no idea what the controls were.

I can't remember if we got it on a CD of demos (those were totally a thing back then) or spent a few hours waiting for the download to finish, but whatever the case, we'd seen screenshots and thought the game looked interesting.Īnyway, we finally booted the game up and were met with a crazy interesting story and narration, and once we got into the game an intriguing village. What feels like many eons ago my father and I sat down in front of the family computer to play the demo for this new game called Strife. But also magic and spells, magical ranged weapons, other neat stuff. Doom only had fists and a chainsaw, but Heretic and Hexen both have an assortment of melee weapons. Oh, there's also a lot more focus on melee in these games.

Doom didn't have that.īut the way you fight and face down your enthralling adventure of exploration, danger, violence, and speed is largely similar to Doom, but with a dark fantasy medieval theme supplanting the horror sci-fi theme, which in my opinion, is done just as well, just as effectively. Hexen (and maybe Heretic, I don't remember) has a hub level design, which is pretty neat. But even the gameplay is largely the same (explore awesomely designed levels to look for keys to unlock doors to get to new areas, and attack badass enemies with badass weapons). But more or less the games feel exactly like Doom. Different player classes can also use certain items differently. In Hexen you pick a class to play as, each of which will have a little different experience through the game, with different weapons, different dexterity, magic, strength, etc. There's a slight modification to how you handle items you find (for instance, saving items in your inventory instead of automatically using them when you pick them up). Hexen 2 had some other modifications, including an obvious graphic upgrade, giving it that late 90s FPS feel we all miss (I DO ANYWAY). The only real differences in gameplay are the ability to look up and down, jump, and in Hexen's case, you can shatter windows and shit. If you love Doom and all the expansions + sequel, you should love these games. Some Doom fans don't like them, and I've yet to hear good reasons why.ĭoom pretty much changed my entire world of gaming when it first came out.

I've never played Strife, but Heretic and Hexen plus their expansions/sequels are fantastic. What do you think of them, and would you recommend them to someone who's never played them before, but loves Doom? I'm really just fishing for r/Doom's opinions on these games. Should I get Heretic II and Strife as well? Strife in particular seems really interesting to me, since I enjoy RPGs, but will it be a disappointment? Would you guys recommend these games? What are some things I should be aware of going into them? How similar/different are they to the Doom series?Īs far as I can tell, you can only get Heretic, the Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders expansion, Hexen, and Hexen II on Steam. I recently purchased the "Doom Classic Complete" bundle on Steam that comes with Doom, Doom 2, Final Doom, and Master Levels (if anyone knows how to get novert working with Master Levels, that would be so awesome).įinal Doom and Master Levels in particular have reawakened my need for fresh Doom experiences, so I'm coming to r/Doom to see if Heretic/Hexen/Strife will scratch that itch.

HERETIC GAME SERIES LORE PC

I've been a huge fan of Doom (and especially Doom 2) for many years now- they were the games that got me into PC gaming.
